Residential Wayfinding: Clippers Quay, Manchester
Wayfinding strategy & sign design
Clippers Quay is a 600 home, build to rent development located in one of the north-west’s most significant cultural, sporting and leisure destinations. Spread across three buildings, Clippers Quay offers an extensive range of shared amenities. These include a private gym, resident’s lounge, gardens and a river-facing public realm. To help attract and retain residents, the client wanted a bespoke residential wayfinding design to communicate the brand and encourage residents to explore and use these amenities. The wayfinding also needed to welcome and invite visitors in to take advantage of the retail offers and so enliven the environment.
Designed by London based agency Luminous, the brand is inspired by the historic clipper tea ship. Elements of this identity are reflected within design of the sign forms and graphic content. A high level identity sign, featuring the brand logotype acts as a beacon drawing in visitors. Mapping totems at the entrances welcome new arrivals and provide reassurance. The brief also included the design of the building identification signs, road names and vehicle wayfinding.
The result is an information layer that delivers a high level of customer service and communicates the brand in a consistent way across the whole site.
