The Velvet Principle

Brief: Wayfinding & Sign Design

Sector: Shopping Centre

Client: Pasha Construction, Chapman Taylor

Neighbour to the National Sports Stadium and located next to one of the city’s busiest transport hubs, Ganjlik Mall is a significant retail and leisure destination in Baku. With four retail floors and two basement level car parks, Ganjlik Mall offers nearly 550,000 sq. ft. of retail space and over 1000 spaces for cars.

The facade design comprises four contrasting materials on each of the four elevations, offering changing vistas and a varied relationship to the surrounding environment. An elevated canopy extending the length of the building reflects this dynamism and provides an architectural signature for the building.

The geometry of the roof and the contrast created where the different materials intersect provided the inspiration for the design of the wayfinding signs.  The forms have a coloured transparent body that interlocks with a stainless steel casing. So that shoppers always know where they are, each retail floor was allocated its own colour, which is carried through all sign types. Colour is also used to differentiate between the car park levels to help returning shoppers find their vehicles. Dual language text and extensive use of pictograms help ensure that the international audience can easily understand the information.
